I wasn't quite around for the 1955 CBC but that same year birdwatching actually made the COVER of Sports Illustrated! Bob, perhaps you've seen the issue: May 16, 1955. I would love to attach an image of that cover but don't see that option here.
Interestingly, Jeff, I came across that cover after I wrote this piece! The definition of "sports" back then may have been very different, or at least what SI was willing to cover.
The cover appeared in my column about 12 years ago . . . the topic was sport vs hobby.
