My first bird of the year was an American Goldfinch! It was about a half-hour after sunrise when one showed up at the thistle feeder.

My first bird of 2023 was a downy woodpecker in our backyard river birch. I feel fortunate when I see other birds besides house sparrows since there is not that many trees around because everything is over developed in my neighborhood which is just west of Wrigley Field.

I was hoping for the male American Kestrel that sometimes shows up in the mornings but no such luck. Had House Sparrows instead.

Mourning Dove! I've had a lot of them at my feeders for a couple months now. Sometimes 10 at a time. As of 3:45 I'm up to 8 birds for the yard.

Happy New Year to all!

Nice! I’m up to about 10. No doves yet, though. We do well with woodpeckers.

Slept in aft a late NY with friends. 1st bird to greet me in 2023: Mourning Dove. Happy New Year!

Nice one! I think all our MODOs are over on your side of the neighborhood. 😀

Lol! Yes! We do get a ton of them!

I had a female card at the feeder this morning! I was positive it was going to be a chickadee, so it was a pleasant surprise.

Waking up and plodding into my living room, right away I heard the house sparrows that own our little corner of Andersonville. They particularly love to hang out in this large bush outside our window, although sadly there weren't any in there this time.

I gotta say that when I woke up and *didn't* hear House Sparrows right away I sprinted down to the feeder in hopes of something else, hence the goldfinch as bird No. 1.

My first bird was a black capped chickadee. I assumed it would be a house sparrow but looked out the window and there it was

My first bird was a mourning dove - and 26 of her friends! Four in my backyard tree and the rest in a few trees across the fence.

That's great. I love running into those huge flocks of doves in winter.

I also got a report of a Rock Pigeon, which is a possibility for me but a long shot as they tend to stay around the arterial streets here.

We've got a Canada Goose honking from Julie D! I could've sworn I heard one at about 7:30a myself, but it only called once.

Jarod H. had a Blue Jay for his first bird, downstate Illinois.

Getting reports on Twitter of flicker and chickadee--nice ones!

Robert L. had a House Sparrow in the Uptown neighborhood of Chicago.

We've got a report from Mark L. of two American Crows chasing a Cooper's Hawk. That's an amazing first bird experience. I'm not sure which species was first, I'd suspect the crows.
