I was lucky enough to have a sora visit my backyard two weeks ago on the northside of Chicago. I was watering a flower bed in the evening and I heard a rustling (assumed it was a chipmunk...or worse) and then out popped the sora. It was a juvenile and it perched in some rose bushes for while and let me take a few photos before it returned to the underbrush of the flower bed. Very cool experience.
Hmmm, the very first time I used Merlin to ID what birds it could hear, it said it could hear a sora. ‼️ I’ve looked and listened, but so far, a sora is not on my farm bird list. I wrote the Merlin folks and asked what distance the app could pick up, wondering if it was hearing a horse whinny at the horse farm behind us. I never heard a response from them, and I never believed it could have actually been a sora. Now you’ve reignited my curiosity about what Merlin actually heard that day.
