Do you have thoughts on Flaco's escape and life in the "wild?" I have been really thrilled to follow his story for the past year, but I am definitely still worried that he will ingest too much rat poison or collide with a vehicle. But... he's had a year of freedom now, so if he did die young, would it have been "worth it?" I find it an endlessly fascinating philosophical question.

There’s a lot to think about there. I thought it was funny that he escaped the zoo and then seemed to thrive. Probably my irreverent Gen X sensibilities. Still there are a lot of hazards in the big city and the situation is far from natural—a nonnative owl in a highly urban environment. I like the idea of letting nature take its course. It is not as though Eagle Owl is an endangered species.

That makes sense to me. I love me some celebrity animals and it's sad when they don't live as long as we would like, but the truth is that this is just how life is. Like Rose and Monty, Flaco has already made a huge contribution to the way people think about birds in cities. And he's still out there! 🤞🏻
