You might recall that I am developing a bird-focused exhibition for Chicago’s Newberry Library. That is requiring quite a bit of focus, but I do plan to share some occasional research insights here. So expect more birding history, some of which has already been peppered into TWiB from time to time.
The Prairie State series of films was meant to be a trilogy. “The Magic Stump” and “Fluddles” were the first of the films, and the third one has been up in the air. The good news is that there will be a short film—not quite a sequel but something shorter—made as part of the “Winging It” exhibition. “The Best-Known Grouse of the Western States” will fit well with the Prairie State oeuvre. It will study the transformation of the prairie into agricultural lands and how that change impacted a single species. The film will appear in the exhibition gallery, and we’ll look for some other venues for sharing with everyone online.
If you’d like to be involved in this effort, please review the following sponsorship document. The Newberry welcomes contributions of any size. I look forward to sharing more details as this project progresses!
I'm happy for you that you encounter grouse. They are such uncommon species where I live in southeast Iowa.
