Love this piece! Makes me want to drive to the closest minor league game featuring a bird name and take in the game and go home with some gear. A quick scan shows three within 5 hours or so with bird nicknames - Rome (GA) Emperors [penguin], Myrtle Beach Pelicans and Fayetteville Woodpeckers. Thanks for sharing this story.

Nice. Makes me want to get out and take in a minor league game, whatever the mascot.

It’s been a while, but I used to take my binoculars to the Toledo Mud Hens games to watch the peregrine falcons nesting on a tall downtown building just outside the ballpark. Sitting near first base gave the best view down the 3rd base line! I was happy to talk birds, even mud hens ie coots, with anyone who was curious enough to ask what I was watching!

Good review, Bob. I haven't been to a Boomers game in years. When the team was born, I remember helping them add (and correct) some information on their website about the actual bird they are named after. Wonder if that info is still posted. Hope so. I'll check.
