One of our most common and charming native birds, Red-winged Blackbirds have returned to our latitude about two weeks ahead of schedule. Eighteen males were seen on a recent walk, staking out territory across a few acres of marshy, prairie habitat. Red-winged Blackbirds—especially males—are easy to see around wetlands and meadows, and they’ve adapted to nest throughout the cornfields of the Midwest.
I absolutely LOVE red winged black birds! I love how in every video of mine (rescuing or just having a nice day feeding my waterfowl friends) they're ALWAYS IN THE BACKGROUND CALLING SO SO LOUDLY! They really make themselves known and that is one of my favorite characteristics of them. Last yr there was a female that ate with my ducks everyday. I'd go to put food down and everyday she'd show up and ear along side of all of them. She got so comfortable w/ me that I know she learned what bag I even brought the food in. I'd turn around and she'd just be sitting there. After a few bites her mate would come to join her. She was very sweet. I also love how protective they are with each other. They're like Canada geese,but in bird form when it comes to their little ones. The birds who managed to get enough guts raised to defend themselves against humans,&for their size...well I love when I see that happen every time. They have nerves of steel, they are small but mighty &gorgeous all at time. This year I did notice they arrived way earlier in Pennsylvania than yrs past. Feb 28th I heard my first one...looked way way up high and there he was at the tip top of the highest tree looking at me. I thought I was hearing things to be completely honest. That evening, that was the only one I seen or heard. Now they're slowly but surely starting to show themselves more. I do hear of them dive bombing ppl when they have nests in other areas. I WISH they'd do that at the park I frequent bc the humans there definitely deserve it! Ty for sharing 💓!
