I don't believe this is a new phenomenon. In 1995 I tent camped in SW Yellowstone NP, just after Labor Day weekend. I was the only one without an RV. The site host said that is why he came over to talk to me.
Very possible that I changed while the RVs stayed the same! I did not camp in “car campgrounds” much until having kids. Prior to that I was a backpacker and even more of a minimalist. I avoided crowds religiously. Now I am in car campgrounds due to various family needs.

100% agree with you. However, a light rake to create a tidy place for a tent has really helped me and my crew.
I can imagine that being helpful! I can relate as someone who often forgets to pack a broom and regrets it.
