The robins started arriving in late September. They’d gather in the nearest treetops as dusk approached, nearly every night for two weeks. Then they’d drop into our yard to feed, up to as many as 16 at one time. That’s a lot of robins for about 400 square feet of lawn.
American Robins aren’t an unusual sight—even all year-round—but this was different. Something had happened in the grass of the yard, a hatching of grubs—larval beetles—most likely.
